This query might well sound pretty absurd, and in a sense, it is. Thus, I would bet that within the academy, fewer sociologists per capita are racist than are members of any other discipline. Indeed, sociologists have been in the forefront when it comes to researching the various causes and consequences of racism, and have been among the loudest when it comes to proclaiming (erroneously, I believe ? but that is a topic for another post) that race is ?socially constructed? from the ground up, and thus altogether independent of biology. Right here in this selfsame Brainstorm venue, moreover, I have learned quite a lot from Laurie Essig?s posts concerning the often-hidden racist assumptions behind much of modern American life. And Laurie is a sociologist.
From whence, therefore, cometh my intentionally provocative question: Is sociology racist?
From, in a sense, my own ignorance: From the fact that I do not understand how the discipline of sociology justifies its existence as the study of complex social processes in modern Western societies. In short, what is the justification for organizing a discipline around the complex social activities of modern Western societies, as distinct from the rest of human beings? There is, after all, another acknowledged discipline that concerns itself with the entire range of Homo sapiens? social phenomena: namely, anthropology.
When sociology was first defined and established, by August Comte and then Emile Durkheim (not to mention Karl Marx, and later, Max Weber, as well as others), the expressed concern was with ?social facts? as somehow irreducible phenomena, deserving of study in their own right. I think this itself is debatable, at least the claim of irreducibility. But largely unspoken, and far less defensible, was the idea that these social facts as they pertain to Western (white-skinned) participants in ?high civilization? (i.e., Europe and to a lesser extent, North America) warranted a distinct science and approach, separate from anthropology, which became the study of social facts among dark-skinned colonials, who were to be studied by representatives of those societies studied, in turn, by sociologists.
What, pray tell, is the justification?ethical, practical, scientific, humanistic, conceptual?for this distinction? Why, for example, should anthropologists have cornered the market in researching kinship ? as though kinship categories aren?t important among upper-class London socialites, or inhabitants of South Central LA? And why should sociologists lay special claim, for example, to the role of conflict, in group/out group phenomena, and so forth? Anthropologists, not sociologists, deal with hunter-gatherer societies, pastoralists, the use of medicinal herbs, etc., whereas sociologists, not anthropologists, deal with ?ethnicity,? for example, and the niceties of Gemeinschaft vs Gesellschaft. Why?
In the past, I?ve looked on indulgently as certain colleges (invariably small ones), combine anthropology and sociology into one department, a consolidation that presumably has been due to fiscal limitations and constraints. But I?m beginning to wonder if they know something that their colleagues choose to ignore: That the distinction between sociology and anthropology is rooted purely in history and the misconception that to understand the modern, ?advanced? West somehow requires different methods and distinct theoretical constructs from what is needed to study ?primitive? people with mostly dark skins, and who often partake of exotic?if not to say, downright bizarre?ways of living.

The report could urge Congolese authorities to follow-up with independent investigations and bring perpetrators to justice, writes guest blogger Tracy Fehr.

Last November?s controversial Congolese presidential and legislative elections continue to make headlines, further diminishing a sense of legitimacy or credibility in the Congolese electoral process. Last week, the UN released a report documenting acts of serious human rights violations committed during the elections ? including killings, disappearances, and arbitrary detentions ? by members of the Congolese defense and security forces in the nation?s capital, Kinshasa.
The report, which is based on findings from a UN Joint Human Rights Office special investigation, documents election-related human rights violations that took place between Nov. 26, 2011, two days prior to the November 28 elections, and Dec. 25, 2011.
The report confirms that at least 33 people were killed in Kinshasa, including 22 by gunshot. It notes, however, ?The number of deaths could be much higher as the team faced many difficulties in documenting the allegations of violations of the right to life that were reported.?
Furthermore, the report cites that at least 83 people were injured, including 61 by gunshot. At least 265 civilians were detained illegally or arbitrarily, many of whom, according to the report, were targeted due to their affiliation with the Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS) opposition party of Etienne Tshisekedi. At least 16 individuals remain unaccounted for.
"We have heard multiple accounts of Republican Guards shooting live ammunition into crowds and of the torture of arbitrarily detained individuals," said the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay. "The authorities must ensure that such grave violations of human rights are investigated, perpetrators brought to justice and that those who remain illegally detained are released without delay."
Colonel Kanyama, a commander with the National Congolese Police (PNC) in Kinshasa?s Lukunga district, known by locals as ?death spirit,? was identified in concurring testimonies as a ring leader in the body removal process. According to the report, ?[groups arrived in] a PNC vehicle from which officers fired tear gas; the vehicle was followed by a dilapidated vehicle from which marksmen in civilian clothes fired at demonstrators, and then a covered lorry with body collectors.?

By msnbc.com staff and news services
Israeli security forces fired rubber bullets, tear gas and stun grenades to break up groups of Palestinian stone-throwers on Friday as annual Land Day rallies turned violent.
Palestinian activists have called for a "Global March to Jerusalem" to mark the day when Israeli Arabs protest against government policies that they say has stripped them of land.
Arab news channel Al Jazeera reported in a live blog on its website that the Israeli army was "pushing protesters back towards Ramallah with the use of tear gas and water cannons".
It also reported that there are close to 1,000 protestors gathered in Ramallah.
Israeli forces were put on high alert at frontier crossings with Lebanon and Syria but there were no reports of any protesters nearing the border fences, unlike last year when several demonstrators were killed there in Land Day protests.

However, violence flared at checkpoints in the occupied West Bank to the north and south of Jerusalem. Witnesses also reported disturbances at gates leading into the Old City, with police looking to limit access to the revered al-Aqsa Mosque.
Israeli security forces fired rubber bullets, tear gas and stun grenades to break up groups of Palestinian stone-throwers as annual Land Day rallies turned violent. Msnbc.com's Dara Brown reports.
A Reuters reporter saw two men being carried away injured after scuffles at Jerusalem's Lions' Gate, while police said they had made several arrests at the nearby Damascus Gate.
Jerusalem is a focal point of conflict, as Palestinians want the city's eastern sector, captured by Israel in a 1967 war, as capital of a future state. Israel has annexed East Jerusalem as part of its capital and insists the city remain united.
"We are determined to march together toward Jerusalem, and hopefully we will break through and reach it," said a masked youth, calling himself Rimawi, as he faced off against soldiers in the West Bank city Ramallah, a short distance from Jerusalem.
Flag-waving crowds neared the Qalandiya crossing out of Ramallah, some of them hurling stones at the security forces, but were forced back when border police sprayed them with foul-smelling liquid from a water cannon.
Land Day commemorates the killing by security forces of six Arabs in 1976 during protests against government plans to confiscate land in northern Israel's Galilee region.
Arabs make up about a fifth of Israel's total population. Many complain of discrimination. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has recently called for improved efforts to integrate Arab citizens into Israel's work force.

Tania James kicked off the first installment of the James Baker Hall Writer?s Series in the Center Theatre on Tuesday night.
The Writer?s Series is hosted by the Cultural Arts Committee of the Student Activities Board.
The James Baker Hall series honors writers who have been raised or influenced by living in Kentucky, and is designed as a memorial to James Baker Hall, a renowned Kentucky writer and former UK faculty member, according to the SAB website.
Tania James is a 2003 Harvard University graduate, she received her bachelor?s in filmmaking with a minor in creative writing and later received her master?s in fiction at Columbia University.
James lives in Washington, D.C., and teaches creative writing at George Washington University.
Her debut novel ?Atlas of Unknowns? was short listed for the DSC Prize for South Asian Literature.
On being labeled a South Asian writer, James said, ?I?m most often called an Indian-American writer, never called a South Asian writer, and rarely called a Kentucky writer.?
Her decision to become a writer stemmed from the ever-repeating lesson her grandmother instilled in her to ?let nothing go to waste? during her childhood spent learning how to prepare traditional Indian dishes.
?It?s in Kentucky where I got my first dangerous taste of what being a writer was,? James said.
James attended Governor?s School for the Arts when she was in high school and Hall was a speaker one night during her stay.
?He spoke in a way that made his words escape the page with unforced power,? James said. ?I was so inspired to find my voice after that.?
When a student prompted James to speak of how to improve as a writer, she gave advice that a previous professor gave her, to look at writers in a mechanical way and learn how they piece their sentences together.
?She really revealed to us how her mind tends to work as a writer, which was fascinating to me,??Austin Tracy, a French freshman, said.
James said her husband travels a lot and that has influence on her writing.
?I like using my travel as a canvas for my fiction, but on the other hand, it feels like dangerous terrain,? James said.
The power of literature is something that James believes is still ever-present in this digital age, saying that novels delve into the minds of characters in a way that no media can.
?It?s so refreshing to see someone be inspired by, and actually love the work they do,? Madison Fugate, a psychology junior, said. ?I?ll be interested to see her work develop over the years.?
Hope Johnson and Bianca Briggs are the next writers that will be featured in the series, continuing at 6 p.m. on April 10 with an open mic offered to students to begin the night.

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (AP) ? Anti-abortion lawmakers want the Kansas Legislature to investigate after a former abortion provider discarded hundreds of patients' medical records in a recycling bin outside a Kansas City-area elementary school.
The general counsel for the state board that regulates doctors said Tuesday it will consider going to court for an outside custodian to oversee remaining records from the Kansas City, Kan., clinic formerly operated by Krishna Rajanna.
The clinic closed in 2005, shortly after Krishna Rajanna lost his Kansas medical license. Rajanna told The Associated Press he still has documents stored in his home in Overland Park.
The discovery of the discarded documents prompted an investigation by local police, the Johnson County district attorney's office and the state regulatory board. Rajanna said he'd expected the bin to be emptied quickly.

At least once a week I encounter a client who is weighing the pros and cons of renting versus buying Philadelphia Real Estate. Unfortunately theres no formula or analysis that works for every individual, the decision whether to rent or buy must be made on a case by case basis because the process requires a very subjective weighing of pros and cons. As the housing market crash recently taught us, buying a home is not always the best option for every individual. Here is my best attempt to help with the decision of whether to buy or rent Philadelphia Real Estate.
Lets start with a few concrete laws:
1.If you are unsure about the stability of your job DO NOT BUY, renting is the only sensible option for you. If you are comfortable with your job stability then the home buying option is on the table. 2.There are calculators and formulas that can help analyze whether it makes more sense to buy or rent in a particular city based on current economic conditions. These are helpful but they dont factor in all of the subjective elements listed below. The numbers alone are not determinative.
Renting Philadelphia Real Estate ? Pros and Cons
PRO ? Renting requires a relatively small initial outlay of money. Most rentals in the Philadelphia require only first, last, and security deposit. This is dramatically less that buying a home and the security deposit is returned if the property is left in good condition at move out. PRO ? Renting does not require a long term commitment. Most leases in Philadelphia are for 12 months and then they either automatically renew or terminate. PRO ? Renting allows you the opportunity to familiarize yourself with one or multiple neighborhoods in Philadelphia before making a long term commitment to one. PRO ? Economic and housing markets dont really affect renters. Rents may go up slightly or down slightly but things like declining home values, under water mortgages and shadow inventory arent important to renters. PRO ? Renters dont have to allocate money for annual repairs. PRO- Renting a home is a quick process that typically takes 2-3 weeks total. PRO ? Renters dont pay real estate taxes or worry about real estate tax hikes CON ? Renters have limited control over the property and the condition of the property they live in. CON ? Renters dont build any equity in a home. The entire monthly payment goes to the landlord. CON ? Renting is not a long term solution for most individuals. CON ? There are no tax deduction benefits for renters
Buying Philadelphia Real Estate ? Pros and Cons
PRO ? Buying Philadelphia Real Estate affords the buyer 100% control over the property. If the owner is unhappy with the condition he or she can make alterations as desired. PRO ? Interest rates are historically low. PRO ? When you buy a home some portion of the monthly mortgage payment goes towards equity in the home. PRO ? Buyers are entitled to significant tax deductions for mortgage interest and depreciation. CON ? Buyers must allocate money for annual repairs CON ? Buying a home is a long process compared to renting. The average home purchase takes 30-60 days. CON ? Buying requires a long term commitment. In most cases the buyer should plan on owning the property for 5 years or longer. CON ? Buyers pay real estate taxes and face risk of annual increases
Its easy to understand the difficulty clients encounter when deciding whether to rent or buy Philadelphia Real Estate. At the end of the day theres really no right or wrong answer, only what makes sense for an individual with a specific set of circumstances.
Understanding the process of buying Philadelphia Real Estate can seem daunting but is really pretty simple if you read and follow this advice. Philadelphia Real Estate expert Frank L. PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) ? VCU took out a newspaper ad earlier this week proclaiming: "Back to Bust Your Bracket."
The ad wasn't the idea of coach Shaka Smart or even his athletic department. But the Rams backed it up ? at least for their opening round ? by defeating No. 5 seed Wichita State 62-59 in the South Regional.
VCU (29-6), a 12th seed, advances to play fourth-seeded Indiana (26-8) in a third-round game Saturday at the Rose Garden. Louisville (27-9), the fourth seed in the West, will play fifth-seeded New Mexico (28-6) in the other game.
Smart seemed sort of embarrassed about the newspaper ad, but he's aware that expectations are raised this season for the Rams, who unexpectedly rode all the way to the Final Four last year.
Even President Barack Obama picked the Rams to win the first game against the Shockers.
"I think one of the motivational factors you always want to have going into any game is something to prove," said Smart, whose own profile also seems to rise with each win. "If you have something to prove, you're just going to play harder, you're going to be a little meaner, and you're going to be a little bit tougher out there.
"And we certainly had something to prove being a 12 seed."
If that wasn't enough, Smart and his staff put together a video of some of the pundits making their picks, with most of them going for Wichita State. It worked.
On Thursday night, the Rams' defense locked down the victory against the rallying Shockers (26-6). VCU pressured 7-foot Wichita State center Garrett Stutz, who missed a game-tying 3-pointer as time wound down.
The Rams led by as many as 13 in the second half, but Wichita State (26-6) closed to 54-53 on Stutz's layup with 5:39 left. Troy Daniels hit a 3-pointer for the Rams, and Joe Ragland answered with his own for the Shockers.
Toure Murry made a 3 that gave Wichita State the lead, but Bradford Burgess came back with his own to give the Rams a 60-59 edge. Darius Theus then tacked on a runner before Stutz's last-chance attempt was off.
"I was kind of the last option on top, and VCU read the play well," Stutz said. "By the time I got the ball I knew there wasn't enough time to go for a two. Couldn't have been more than 2 or 3 seconds left."
Burgess finished with 16 points, and Theus and Daniels had 10 points apiece for the Rams, who edged Drexel 59-56 in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament final to make it to the NCAAs.
Last year, VCU rolled to tournament victories over Georgetown, Purdue, Florida State and Kansas, making the Rams just the third No. 11 seed to reach the Final Four. The run ended when they lost to Butler in Houston. Seniors Joey Rodriguez and Jamie Skeen anchored that team.
Smart anticipates the comparisons, but shrugs them off.
"Honestly, we won 29 games already this year. Last year's team only won 28. We won our conference tournament. Last year's team lost in the conference championship game," Smart said. "So in a lot of ways we've done better that what last year's team did. Only difference is obviously last year's team went to the Final Four. And we've still got a long way to go before we can approach that."
The Rams will get their next test against the Hoosiers, who defeated New Mexico State 79-66. Jordan Hulls went on a second-half shooting spree and finished with 22 points for Indiana, which is back in the NCAA tournament after a five-year absence.
Wendell McKines led New Mexico State (26-10) with 15 points and nine rebounds.
In the earlier games at the Rose Garden, Kendall Williams scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half and New Mexico held off Long Beach State for a 75-68 win in the West Regional. Casper Ware, the Big West player of the year, finished with 17 points on 5-of-19 shooting for the 49ers (25-9)
The day started with Louisville advancing in the tournament for the first time since 2009 with a 69-62 victory over Davidson (25-8). Guard Peyton Siva, boosted by a big contingent of fans from his hometown of Seattle, had 17 points and six assists.
Jake Cohen had 24 points and 10 rebounds for the Wildcats, who were making their first tournament appearance since 2008, when Stephen Curry led the underdog Davidson to the regional finals.
The Cardinals, coming off a four-win-in-four-days run to the Big East tournament title, are making their sixth straight appearance in the NCAAs ? but they haven't managed to get out of the opening round for the past two seasons.
"We just wanted to carry the Big East championship over to the NCAA, playing relaxed, playing loose," Louisville guard Chris Smith said. "We just came out with a lot of confidence."
Smith didn't mince words when it comes to the Cardinals' ultimate ambition.
"Our goal right now is to get to Phoenix, and after Phoenix, we want to get to New Orleans," he said. "Right now we just want to take it one game at a time and just win."

New labor-tracking tool proposed to reduce C-sections in first-time momsPublic release date: 14-Mar-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

COLUMBUS, Ohio Researchers have designed a new version of a labor-tracking tool for pregnant women that they predict could reduce the use of hormonal intervention during labor and lower the number of cesarean sections performed on low-risk, first-time mothers.
The tool, called a partograph, takes into account the most recent research findings that suggest labor is not a linear process, but is instead slower during earlier labor and accelerates gradually as labor advances. A diagnosis of abnormally slow labor is the No. 1 reason that C-sections are performed in low-risk births by first-time moms.
A partograph is a printed graph on which a clinician can plot cervical dilation and the baby's descent to determine whether labor is progressing normally or if intervention might be needed.
The researchers, lead author Jeremy Neal of Ohio State University and co-author Nancy Lowe of the University of Colorado Denver, hope their partograph could be computerized or designed as a smartphone application.
When labor is considered too slow, clinicians often prescribe oxytocin to speed up the process. Oxytocin, known by the brand name Pitocin, is a hormone that stimulates uterine contractions. Research suggests that clinicians use it to speed up labor in about 50 percent of births by first-time mothers.
The term for an abnormally slow labor is dystocia. But no precise definition of dystocia exists, so it means different rates of labor for different clinicians. Though the use of oxytocin in cases of dystocia is intended to reduce the chances for a cesarean section, studies show that the hormone doesn't have that effect.
Neal and Lowe predict that if their partograph were adopted widely in the United States, dystocia diagnoses would be limited to only the slowest 10 percent of first-stage labors; oxytocin interventions would drop by more than 50 percent; and cesarean sections performed because of dystocia would decrease by more than 50 percent. Currently, more than a quarter of births by low-risk, first-time mothers result in cesarean section.
"Dystocia is known to be over-diagnosed, which leads to unnecessary intervention, including cesareans," said Neal, an assistant professor of nursing at Ohio State. "We can tackle this issue by giving dystocia a clinically meaningful definition. This would go a long way toward preventing unnecessary cesareans for first-time moms which would, in turn, increase their chances of having successful labors and vaginal births for second, third and fourth deliveries as well."
Neal and Lowe are preparing to lead a pilot study of their partograph's effectiveness. Their proposal was published in a recent issue of the journal Medical Hypotheses.
Of the 4 million births in the United States each year, about 40 percent of babies are born to first-time moms. This partograph is designed for in-hospital labor assessment of first-time mothers with normal pregnancies whose labor has begun spontaneously.
Labor trends have changed since the 1950s, but Neal asserts that studies from that era still influence clinician expectations today. These older studies suggest that in first-time mothers, the cervix should dilate about 1.2 centimeters per hour once it has dilated 4 centimeters and until it has opened to 9 centimeters. Birth takes place at 10 centimeters, when the cervix is considered fully dilated.
"Clinicians tend to have an expectation that change in the cervix during labor is linear, with a dilation rate of 1 centimeter per hour often being considered to be the slowest acceptable rate of cervical change," said Neal, who also is a certified nurse-midwife. "However, these criteria are based on work started in the 1950s and ended in the 1970s that just doesn't fit the labor patterns of women today, for whatever reason. Research from the past two decades shows us that labor is not typically linear and rates of cervical change from one centimeter to the next are commonly much slower than 1 centimeter per hour. Clinging to defunct dilation expectations leads to unnecessary interventions during labor."
Neal said concerns over slow labor represent a "gray area" in labor assessment some believe prolonged labor can cause distress for the baby, especially in developing countries where sophisticated fetal monitoring is less likely to be available, while others associate the use of oxytocin with adverse effects that include worrisome changes in fetal heart tones.
But what is undisputed is that dystocia, despite its vague definition, is the primary contributor to C-sections for low-risk, first-time moms. And with those come typical risks for bleeding and anesthesia complications associated with surgery as well as long-term risks for painful scarring, stillbirths and spontaneous abortions in subsequent pregnancies, future placenta attachment disorders and uterine rupture and many of these risks are not commonly discussed with patients, Neal said.
Partographs have existed since the 1970s, and they are routinely used in most other countries, but have not taken hold in the United States. Neal describes this proposed partograph as more physiologically based than existing partographs, which continue to describe labor as a linear process.
"Because we don't use partographs in the United States, it will take some work to get this up and running in the U.S., but that is our goal," Neal said. "We want to positively impact birth outcomes for moms and babies as well as long-term health for women in the U.S. If our partograph were to spread to other countries, that would be fantastic, too."
The partograph is not intended for use until a woman is in active labor which also can be difficult to define. In general, active labor begins when uterine contractions cause the cervix to be dilated to between 3 and 5 centimeters. Women admitted to hospitals before active labor has begun are almost twice as likely to receive oxytocin than are women admitted in active labor.
The tool consists of a chart featuring time passed on the x axis and cervical dilatation and the baby's descent on dual y axes. The most distinctive feature of this new partograph, however, is that it takes into account the hyperbolic curve that typifies most labors. Previous partographs have predicted that labor progress will be plotted in a straight line.
The proposed partograph features a dystocia line, indicating that when labor plot points appear to the right of that line, a dystocia diagnosis and associated interventions are appropriate.
"Our 'dystocia line' is not meant to indicate increased risk of adverse birth outcomes for women who cross to the right of it. Instead, it is designed to improve the safety of those who do not cross this line by decreasing unnecessary oxytocin use and cesarean sections," Neal said. "Cesarean sections are clearly indicated for some women, but if we're doing a high volume of unnecessary cesareans on first-time moms, then we are simultaneously affecting the future obstetrical course for those women since a primary cesarean is most commonly followed by repeat cesareans in subsequent pregnancies. Long-term health risks go up with each subsequent cesarean."
In addition to their pilot study, Neal and Lowe recommend that a large, multicenter clinical trial is needed to test whether their predictions about the partograph's effectiveness are supported by actual childbirth outcomes.
