Tesla goes to China

Tesla Motors (TSLA)' all-electric Model S sedan has been well received in the United States, and deliveries have just begun in Europe.

Now Tesla is getting ready to take on the world's largest auto market: China, which CEO Elon Musk has described as a "wild card" in the company's future.

Tesla is in a quiet period as executives prepare for the company's Aug. 7 earnings report, and a company representative declined to comment for this story, saying only that Tesla is likely to release more news on

its China strategy next month. But tidbits about Tesla's plans have dribbled out in the Chinese media and from auto experts in Asia.

Its first showroom in mainland China, scheduled to open later this year, will be in central Beijing at the exclusive Parkview Green mall, a gleaming, pyramid-shaped plaza designed with sky-gardens and atria spaces. It is the first mixed-use commercial project in China to be certified LEED Platinum for its energy-efficient design, and Tesla's 8,000-square-foot showroom will be roughly three times larger than its U.S. showrooms.

Auto industry analysts say Chinese consumers' growing appetite for luxury automobiles makes it a natural market for Tesla to tackle. Roughly 19 million vehicles were sold in China last year. Luxury brands like Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche are increasingly popular, and analysts say that Tesla is likely to market the Model S as a luxury vehicle that happens to be an electric one.

"China is the biggest auto market in the world, and that's why Elon Musk is really pushing for sales in China," said Mike Omotoso, senior manager of global powertrain forecasting at LMC Automotive in Troy, Mich. "The showroom is being built in Beijing's equivalent of Rodeo Drive. The Model S may be a good way for the Chinese to say 'I'm wealthy, but also environmentally responsible.' "

Air pollution is a notorious problem in China, and the government is a strong supporter of electric vehicles, particularly of domestic automakers like BYD and Kandi. And a December report by McKinsey & Company found that spending by Chinese consumers on luxury products, from jewelry to clothing and cars, now exceeds that of any other country, including Japan.

"Tesla will sell successfully in China because it is a very high quality and well engineered automobile, a luxury brand and it is foreign made," said Charlie Paglee, CEO of Brannan Auto Engineering in Shanghai who has lived in China for more than two decades.

"Chinese customers will buy the Tesla to show off their wealth and demonstrate their love of the environment. Tesla will be successful in China because they have already become a status symbol in the USA and that standing will translate to China, similar to the prestige of owning an iPhone."

Earlier this spring, an analyst asked Musk what geographic demand for the Model S was looking like given that roughly one in four reservations for the vehicle are from outside the United States.

"I think we will see probably at least 10,000 units a year from demand in Europe, and then at least 5,000 in Asia," said Musk during the May 8 earnings call. "But I mean, that could be, obviously, a much bigger number and China is kind of a wild card here."

Not everyone is bullish about Tesla's prospects in China. The EV market there is in its infancy, and the lack of charging infrastructure is an issue. The Chinese government does not currently offer any incentives for imported electric vehicles; Tesla's Model S is likely to be subject to import and luxury taxes that could double the car's already steep price. Others worry about Tesla's intellectual property being stolen.

"Huge risk," said Theodore O'Neill of Litchfield Hills Research. "I don't see the China market as having any meaningful impact for Tesla's numbers over the next 18-24 months. I'm far more concerned that the Chinese will take a Model S, tear it apart and knock it off."

Tesla currently has a service center in Hong Kong that assists owners of its discontinued all-electric Roadster and handles Model S reservations.

"Hong Kong and China are actually quite different markets. Hong Kong is an extremely wealthy island state with very short commutes, which is ideal for the introduction of electric vehicles like Tesla," said Christopher Foss, senior manager at Dunne & Company in Hong Kong. "Mainland China is a huge country with massive cities typified by urban sprawl, constant traffic jams, and long commutes. But by 2020, China will account for half of all luxury vehicles sold worldwide. So there is certainly strong growth potential for Tesla in the Middle Kingdom, if conditions to provide enough charging stations for the vehicles can be met."

Kingston Chang, who worked at Bentley China for a decade, joined Tesla in March as its general manager for China.

"Mr. Chang will help Tesla navigate its entrance into the Asian market," said analyst Andrea James of Dougherty & Company in a recent research note. "Global demand is robust."

Twitter under fire after bank note campaigner is target of rape threats

Twitter is facing a barrage of criticism after a journalist and feminist blogger who campaigned for Jane Austen to become the new face of the ?10 note was subjected to a series of rape threats.

Caroline Criado-Perez, a freelance journalist who co-founded thewomensroom.org.uk and the Week Woman blog, and fellow campaigners were delighted last week when the Bank of England confirmed that the Pride and Prejudice author would replace Charles Darwin on the notes, probably in 2017.

But Criado-Perez quickly found herself subjected to a sustained campaign of abuse on Twitter, of the type that MPs say should become a criminal matter.

Writing in the Observer, Labour MP Stella Creasy condemned the threats and called for action from both Twitter and its users to push back against online aggression towards women.

"This is about more than making Twitter somewhere fun for everyone to enjoy," she said. "If we want a world where everyone can live hassle-free, then everyday expressions of inequalities need to be confronted ? not least as they help ease the big inequalities."

Fellow Labour MP Steve Rotheram tweeted that "hopefully those responsible will be receiving a knock on the door from their local constabulary".

By Saturday afternoon more than 9,000 people had signed an online petitioncalling on Twitter to add an abuse button for those threatened with sexual violence and to make the site responsible for any criminal threats posted on it.

The petition claims: "During a 12-hour period, Caroline Criado-Perez was targeted repeatedly with rape threats. Caroline attempted to stir a response from Twitter's Mark S Luckie. His response was to lock down his account."

Many who have signed the petition have questioned why the online community appears to be subject to different laws from the real one. "This is criminal behaviour in the real world; why should people get away with it on Twitter?" one supporter wrote.

Another added: "Rape threats are a criminal offence in real life. They should not be allowed in cyberspace."

A number of high-profile names have lent their support. The writer Caitlin Moran tweeted: "For those who say, 'why complain ? just block?' ? on a big troll day, it can be 50 violent/rape messages an hour. Exhausting and upsetting."

The comedian Dara ? Briain warned that Twitter faced an exodus of users if such messages continued to be disseminated. He tweeted: "If the ladies leave twitter because of all the dumb, rapey 14-year-old boys, then I'm outta here people. Like most grownup men too, I'd say."

Criado-Perez said she had been overwhelmed by support: "Lots of people are saying how inspired they feel by my stance on this."

She said it was important to confront those who used rape threats. "We need to get rid of the idea that you don't feed the trolls. Someone issuing rape threats wants women to shut up and get off Twitter ... We can't let them win."

Significantly, it appears that Criado-Perez was the victim of a sustained and co-ordinated attack. Initially, she was the subject of several offensive tweets, but these died away after about a day. She was then subjected to hundreds of tweets, which suggests that she was targeted by a group of Twitter users.

Criado-Perez believes the affair has highlighted Twitter's inability to respond to such attacks. "If you get an abusive message, you can fill in an online form and make a complaint," she said. "But if you're subject to hundreds of tweets it's not practical ? Twitter does not understand the nature of abuse online."

Twitter UK general manager Tony Wang said the company takes online abuse seriously. He tweeted: "We encourage users to report an account for violation of the Twitter rules by using one of our report form. Also, we're testing ways to simplify reporting, eg within a tweet by using the "Report Tweet" button in our iPhone app and on mobile web. We will suspend accounts that, once reported to us, are found to be in breach of our rules."

Violence deepens Egypt turmoil, deposed leader probed for murder

CAIRO (Reuters) - At least nine people were killed in heavy fighting in Egypt during rival mass rallies for and against the army overthrow of President Mohamed Mursi, who was placed under investigation for murder in an escalating showdown with his Islamist backers.

The bloodshed deepened the turmoil convulsing the Arab world's most populous country, and may trigger a decisive move by the military against Mursi's Muslim Brotherhood three weeks after it was shunted from power.

In the sprawling capital, hundreds of thousands of Egyptians heeded a call by army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to hit the streets and give him a popular mandate to confront violence unleashed by his July 3 overthrow of Egypt's first freely elected president.

The Brotherhood mounted counter-demonstrations, swelling a month-long vigil in northern Cairo before violence erupted. A Reuters reporter saw heavy exchanges of gunfire in the early hours of Saturday between security forces and Mursi supporters, who tore up pavement concrete to lob at police.

Clouds of teargas filled the air.

Quoting an unnamed security official, the MENA state news agency reported nine people killed in violence nationwide and at least 200 wounded. A spokeswoman for the pro-Mursi camp said eight Brotherhood supporters had died in the clash near the north Cairo vigil alone, and another said rooftop snipers had opened fire. Reuters could not independently verify the accounts.

Of the official death toll, most occurred in Egypt's second city of Alexandria, on the Mediterranean coast, where hundreds of people fought pitched battles, with birdshot fired and men on rooftops throwing stones at crowds below.

Several of those killed were stabbed, hospital officials said, and at least one was shot in the head.

Following Sisi's summoning of protests, news of the investigation against Mursi over his 2011 escape from jail signaled a clear escalation in the military's confrontation with the deposed leader and his Islamist movement.

MENA said Mursi, who has been held incommunicado at an undisclosed military facility since his overthrow, had been ordered detained for 15 days pending the inquiry.

Egypt's army-installed interior minister, Mohamed Ibrahim, said month-old Cairo vigils by Mursi supporters would be "brought to an end, soon and in a legal manner," state-run al Ahram news website reported.

On Facebook, the Brotherhood said the army had stormed its vigil overnight, triggering the violence. An army official, who declined to be named, denied this. He said the clashes were "near the Brotherhood's sit-in area, but not at it. There is and will not be any attempt to attack the sit-in or evacuate it tonight."

SISI'S RISING STAR

The Brotherhood is bracing for a broad crackdown by the army to wipe out a movement that emerged from decades in the shadows to take power after Egypt's 2011 Arab Spring uprising against autocrat Hosni Mubarak, only to be deposed after a year in government.

There is deepening alarm in the West over the army's move against Mursi, which has triggered weeks of violence in the influential Arab state bordering U.S. ally Israel. Close to 200 people have died.

The country of 84 million people forms a bridge between the Middle East and North Africa and receives $1.5 billion a year in mainly military aid from Washington.

Fireworks lit up the night sky over Cairo's central Tahrir Square, where army supporters rallied clutching posters of Sisi in full ceremonial uniform.

In a sign of the general's rising political star, many of the posters depicted him alongside Gamal Abdel Nasser and Anwar Sadat, former military officers who went on to become presidents of Egypt.

"The Brothers stole our revolution," said Salah Saleh, a horse trainer at the Cairo rally, voicing widespread criticism that Mursi refused to share power after taking office, and then failed to tackle Egypt's many problems.

"They came and sat on the throne and controlled everything."

Interior Minister Ibrahim said authorities would act on complaints filed by Cairo residents against the Brotherhood vigils. Many thousands of men, women and children joined Brotherhood supporters at the group's main round-the-clock sit-in in northeast Cairo.

"It is either victory over the coup or martyrdom," senior Brotherhood politician Mohamed El-Beltagy told the pro-Mursi rally. "Our blood and our souls for Islam!" the crowds chanted.

The Brotherhood accuses the army and hired thugs of stoking trouble to justify a move against the Islamists.

Helicopters repeatedly buzzed low over the pro-Mursi vigil before flying around Tahrir Square, scattering Egyptian flags over the packed supporters.

MURSI CHARGES

"The Muslim Brotherhood has deviated from the path of real Islam," said Gamal Khalil, a 47-year-old taxi driver. "The army is the only honest institution in the country."

The investigation into Mursi centers on accusations that he conspired with the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas to escape from jail during the 2011 uprising, killing some prisoners and officers, kidnapping soldiers and torching buildings.

Mursi has said local people helped him escape during the upheavals, and the Muslim Brotherhood denounced the accusations leveled against him. Hamas challenged investigators to find "one piece of evidence" that it had meddled in Egyptian affairs.

"At the end of the day, we know all of these charges are nothing more than the fantasy of a few army generals and a military dictatorship," Brotherhood spokesman Gehad El-Haddad said. "We are continuing our protests on the streets."

Convulsed by political and economic turmoil, Egypt is deeply polarized, struggling to make the transition from the autocratic rule of Mubarak to a free and open democracy.

State television screened images on Friday of the celebrations that erupted the night Sisi announced Mursi had been deposed. The narrator declared it "the day of liberation from the Brotherhood occupation."

"Egypt against terrorism," declared a slogan on the screen.

The army has appointed an interim government tasked with preparing for parliamentary elections in about six months followed by a new presidential vote. The Brotherhood says it will not join the process.

Apple named Brand of the Year for computer, tablets, phones

Market research firm Harris Interactive published the results of its newest Harris Poll Equitrend study, and the results show that Apple is still tops for consumers. The poll, which queried more than 38,500 American consumers, said that Apple is brand of the year (again) in three different categories: Computer, Tablet and Mobile Phone.

The poll looks at how consumers perceive more than 1,500 lifestyle, product and service brands across 155 different categories. Harris explained that Apple did particularly well in what it calls "Brand Momentum."

The news wasn't all good, however. Harris noted that Apple's reputation for quality has suffered this past year, but the strength of its brand momentum carried the company forward.

Trailing Apple in the computer brands are HP, Dell and Sony. And behind the iPad in tablet brands are the Kindle, Google Nexus, Samsung Galaxy and HP Slate. The iPhone was mobile phone brand of the year, with HTC, Samsung and LG falling behind.

With Apple's earnings posting today, and Microsoft's and Google's last week, we now have the financial results for the three of the largest consumer technology companies in the world. It's safe to say that the second quarter of 2013 has been a tough one for all involved.

All three companies disappointed in some areas, but nonetheless remain extremely profitable. Google's wealth grew significantly this quarter, but even with revenue and profit growth pegged at around 15.5 percent year-over-year, Wall Street were left cold; revenues and profits fell short of expectations.

Microsoft, on the other hand, was always unlikely to see profits drop year-over-year: last year's calendar Q2 saw a huge $6.19 billion "goodwill impairment charge" related to its disastrous acquisition of aQuantive. That said, relatively static Windows revenue, despite the launch and continued push of its Windows 8 and Windows RT operating systems, and a $900 million write-off on its Surface RT tablet, gave investors cause for concern.

Apple also had a troubling quarter, with flat revenues and significantly lower profits than this time last year. The company is making far less revenue per device than it has done in the past, and that's impacting it's bottom line significantly.

Q2 may have been a difficult quarter, but It's fair to say that none of the three are really struggling. Net profit margins ? a tricky figure to use comparatively ? are healthy, revenues are high, and profits remain astronomical.

Charlotte church members protest pastor's leadership

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Tensions ran high at a north Charlotte church Sunday morning as members protested Pastor Andrew Rollinson?s leadership, saying he was fired nearly three months ago but refuses to leave.

?Rollinson must go!? about a dozen people chanted outside Morningstar Baptist Church at 5623 Phillips St., off West Sugar Creek Road in the Derita area. ?When? Today!?

Rollinson said he has no intention of leaving the church. He said the members who fired him did not follow church bylaws, and therefore the decision is invalid. He did not say how the members violated the bylaws.

?I?m the pastor. I will be the pastor until people want to follow the bylaws,? he said. ?This is a group of irate individuals who want what they want and are not able to get it according to the bylaws, and they became irate.?

Several Mecklenburg County sheriff?s deputies remained parked outside the church for hours Sunday. At least twice, opposing sides of the protest argued face to face before services.

?I?m the pastor,? Rollinson told a group of protesters.

?No, you?re not. You?ve been dismissed,? one responded.

Some of the church?s 200 members say they fired Rollinson in April but that he refuses to leave.

?Due to his character that is not becoming of a pastor, his dishonesty, controlling demeanor, using the pulpit to disrespect his members ... we are removing Pastor Andrew J. Rollinson from his duties effective immediately,? says the April 28 letter signed by five church leaders. ?May God continue to bless you and your family and we hate things had to end this way.?

Since Rollinson was hired three years ago, some at the church say he has given himself more power and used it to ban members who don?t agree with him. Some also say Rollinson has given himself more control over church finances.

?All we want is for him to leave,? said Vernell Miller-Thompson.

Nobody was arrested at the church Sunday.

Deputies told Rollinson that after talking with the Sheriff?s Office attorney, they determined he was not trespassing.

Donald Fontenot, one of Rollinson?s deacons, read a statement Sunday in response to the protest.

?We love our pastor Andrew J. Rollinson and the leadership he brings,? the letter said. ?He has not done anything wrong and he leads us in the fear of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.?

The statement also acknowledges that the church has banned 19 members for reasons including ?violating our First Amendment Right, participating (in) and encouraging a public disturbance (and) continuous outbursts of false accusations from the pew.?

Jackie Black, chairman of the board of deacons, said he?s lost trust in church leadership.

?I have a different perspective on preachers now,? he said. ?I see this as a business for them and not a place of worship.?

By the time services began shortly after 11 a.m., the two sides appeared to have reached a truce. Law enforcement left and many members headed into the church for worship.

Dwayne President, who was attending the church for the first time Sunday, said he did not know which side to believe. He also said the tension was distracting from the true purpose of Sunday.

?Gandhi said, ?I like your Christ. I don?t like your Christians.? I can see why he said that now,? President said. ?I?m apologizing for the church. The church is supposed to be an example and a light amongst nonbelievers.?

Black acknowledged that the drama has taken away from the church?s mission.

He said the church plans to involve its attorney more when drafting a contract for the next pastor to ensure nothing like this happens again.

?We?re going to make sure it?s very specific so nobody can take advantage of us again,? he said.

TSA expands faster screening to more travelers

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The government is expanding the ways airline passengers can enroll in an expedited screening program that allows travelers to leave on their shoes, light outerwear and belts and keep laptop computers in cases at security checkpoints.

Under the Transportation Security Administration's Precheck program, only travelers who were members of the frequent flyer programs of some air carriers were eligible for expedited screening. On Friday, TSA Administrator John Pistole said beginning later this year U.S. citizens will be able to enroll online or visit an enrollment site to provide identification, fingerprints and an $85 enrollment fee.

About 12 million people are currently enrolled in the program. Pistole said he expects about another 3 million people to enroll before the end of the year.

Cowboys DT Brent retires, charged in fatal crash

IRVING, Texas (AP) ? Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Josh Brent retired from football Thursday, saying "doing the right things in life" is more important as he prepares to defend himself against a manslaughter charge in the drunken-driving crash that killed a teammate.

Brent said he had "given a lot of thought" to his decision. His football career has been on hold since the Dec. 8 crash that killed Jerry Brown, a practice squad player, college teammate and close friend.

"I am at a point where my main focus is all about getting the priorities in my life in order," Brent said in a statement provided by the team. "Those priorities are more important than football. Doing the right things in life are more important than football. I love the game very much. I love my teammates, but this is the right thing for me to do."

Brent is charged with intoxication manslaughter and faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted, though he could also get probation. Suburban Dallas police accused Brent of driving with a blood-alcohol content more than twice the legal limit the night of the crash.

He has also tested positive twice for marijuana while out on bond, and was briefly jailed after the second test. He is again out on bond, but under stricter conditions that include monitoring for drugs and alcohol, and is banned from driving.

Owner Jerry Jones and coach Jason Garrett both said they supported Brent's decision to focus on life outside of football instead of the game. Jones told reporters that Brent's recent failed drug tests didn't affect his support of the player.

"I promised Jerry's mother that we would support Josh in every way we could," Jones said. "That's been our only thought since the accident is to support him and support our team in their support of him."

The Cowboys at the end of last season put Brent on the reserve non-football injury list. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello indicated the league would not punish Brent now that he was stepping away from football.

"With his retirement, there is no action for us to take at this point," Aiello said.

One of Brent's attorneys, George Milner, said the retirement has no effect on the criminal case. Prosecutors declined to comment.

Senators ready to restore lower college loan rates

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Senators are ready to offer students a better deal on their college loans this fall, but future classes could see higher interest rates.

The Senate could vote as early as Thursday on a bipartisan compromise that heads off a costly increase for returning students. The compromise could be a good deal for students through the 2015 academic year, but then interest rates are expected to climb above where they were when students left campus this spring.

Under the deal, all undergraduates this fall would borrow at 3.85 percent interest rates. Graduate students would have access to loans at 5.4 percent and parents would be able to borrow at 6.4 percent. Those rates would climb as the economy improves and it becomes more expensive for the government to borrow money.

The deal was described by Republican and Democratic aides who insisted on anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the ongoing negotiations by name.

Undergraduates last year borrowed at 3.4 percent or 6.8 percent, depending on their financial need. Graduate students had access to federal loans at 6.8 percent and parents borrowed at 7.9 percent.

The interest rates would be linked to the financial markets, but Democrats won a protection for students that rates would never climb higher than 8.25 percent for undergraduates. Graduate students would not pay rates higher than 9.5 percent and parents' rates would top out at 10.5 percent.

The bipartisan agreement is expected to be the final in a string of efforts that have emerged from near constant work to undo a rate hike that took hold for subsidized Stafford loans on July 1. Rates for new subsidized Stafford loans doubled from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent, adding roughly $2,600 to students' education costs.

Lawmakers from both parties called the increase senseless but differed on how to restore the lower rates. Republicans have pushed for a link between interest rates and the financial markets. Obama included that link in his budget proposal, as did House Republicans. Democrats balked, saying it could produce government profits on the backs of borrowers if rates continued to climb.

Leaders from both parties, however, recognized the potential to be blamed for the added costs in the 2014 elections if nothing were done.

Senate aides said a vote on the agreement could come as early as Thursday, although it could be pushed back to the middle of next week.

The House has already passed student loan legislation that also links interest rates to the 10-year Treasury note. The differences between the Senate and House versions are expected to be resolved before students return to campus this fall, and Obama is expected to sign the bill.

Few students had borrowed for fall classes. Students typically do not take out loans until just before they return to campus, and lawmakers have until the August recess to restore the lower rates. The students who had borrowed for summer programs since July 1 would have their rates retroactively reduced.

The deal was estimated to reduce the deficit by $715 million over the next decade.

Lawmakers and their top aides have been tinkering with various proposals ? nudging here, trimming there ? trying to find a deal that avoids added red ink for students and the government alike.

Democrats and Republicans met with Obama and Vice President Joe Biden on Tuesday at the White House. An outline of an agreement seemed to be taking shape Tuesday, with follow-up meetings Wednesday in Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin's office yielding a final agreement.

Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Republican Sen. Richard Burr of North Carolina were the main negotiators, with Republican Sen. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee and Durbin filling the role of mediators.

US Cellular to reintroduce contracts for existing customer upgrades

Snagging a subsidized phone after completing a two-year contract with US Cellular has meant not having to ink another 24-month commitment, but it looks like that's about to change. We've gotten wind from an internal source that the firm will return to its old ways, requiring existing Belief Plan customers angling for discounted hardware to hitch their wagon to the carrier for an additional two trips around the sun.
