British troops fight Taliban in secret battle

About 80 soldiers from 4th Battalion The Rifles helped the Afghan military halt a militant surge in the Helmand province town of Sangin. Special permission for the mission was given by Defence Secretary Philip Hammond.

The operation was completed last week and all British soldiers survived it unscathed.

They are understood to have killed about 12 Taliban fighters. A number of Afghan troops from the British-mentored 3/215 Brigade were killed.

Defence officials confirmed the secret operation which was launched at a time when Britain is scaling down its military activity ahead of next year?s withdrawal. Western armies are handing control over to the Afghan National Army but remain in the country as ?mentors?.

Afghan military commanders requested help in the region where 106 British personnel lost their lives in the four-year period to 2010.
