Derbyshire, England - A study published this week in England?s Occupational and Environmental Medicine journal points out that asbestos workers not only have a much higher risk of developing severe lung diseases but also of succumbing to cardiovascular issues including heart disease and stroke.

According to an article in The Mail, this latest study analyzed the cause of death among 100,000 asbestos workers who took part in regular voluntary health screenings and answered questions about levels of workplace exposure. The study spanned more than 30 years ? from 1971 to 2005. Specifically, researchers compared the number of deaths from heart attacks and strokes among these workers to the number that would be expected to occur in the general population.

During that time period, 15,557 of the participating individuals passed away. Data showed that about 1,000 died from stroke while approximately 4,000 died from heart disease. Percentage wise, male asbestos workers were 63 percent more likely to die of a stroke and 39 percent more likely to die of heart disease. The figures for women were 100 percent and 89 percent, respectively.

Study authors note that there was also some evidence that the greater the length of exposure to asbestos, the greater the likelihood of dying of heart disease. Smoking was taken into account when analyzing the data.

The study puts focus on yet another reason for a worldwide ban on asbestos. It has been clear for decades that exposure to the toxic mineral caused diseases such as asbestosis, mesothelioma, lung cancer, and other forms of cancer. The United Kingdom, where the study was completed, has one of the worst rates of mesothelioma on the planet, trumped only by Australia.

Evidence of 'earliest fire use'

Scientists say they have new evidence that our ancestors were using fire as early as a million years ago.

It takes the form of ash and bone fragments recovered from Wonderwerk Cave in South Africa.

The team tells the journal PNAS that the sediments suggest frequent, controlled fires were lit on the site.

The ability to use fire is regarded as a key step in human development because it gave us access to cooked foods and new technologies.

Stone tools found at Wonderwerk Cave indicate the ancestor in question may have been Homo erectus, a species whose existence has been documented as far back as 1.8 million years ago.

Establishing precisely when humans first acquired the ability to control fire has been very difficult.

There have been several claims that the skill was in existence even earlier than at Wonderwerk.

But they have all been challenged, with sceptics arguing the fire remains from open sites could have been the result of natural blazes ignited by lightning.

In contrast, the PNAS team, which consists of scientists based at US, Israeli, German and South African institutions, says statements about the Northern Cape cave are far more secure.

If correct, the Wonderwerk discovery would push the earliest indisputable controlled use of fire back by about 300,000 years.

In their paper, the researchers describe burnt remains of grasses, brushes, leaves and even bones in the cave's sediments some 30m back from the entrance.

This makes it far less likely that what they are viewing is material from wildfires that was simply blown into the cave by wind, they argue.

The depth of the sediments also suggests fires were lit on the same spot over and over again.

HTC One X review

Don't call it a comeback. HTC certainly was in the running for King of Mobile World Congress 2012 (an award that would be way cooler if it existed) with the new HTC One line, and the HTC One X specifically. When you stop and think about it, however, it's also a logical progression.

HTC started 2011 with the eventually disappointing Verizon ThunderBolt, which was thick, heavy and a battery hog — due in no small part to its LTE radio. The prevailing winds started to shift later in the year, however, with the likes of the Sensation and Amaze 4G, and you started to get a sense (pardon the pun) that the Taiwanese manufacturer was starting to regain its footing. (That shift was further indicated by the likes of the Windows Phone HTC Titan line.)

And that brings us to 2012 and the HTC One X, the pinnacle of the trio of Android smartphones that make up the HTC One line. (The others are the HTC One S and HTC One V.) There actually are two versions of the One X — the GSM version with a quad-core Tegra 3 processor, and another with a dual-core Qualcomm Krait processor and an LTE radio for 4G data.

The HTC One X review that follows is of the international quad-core version. We'll follow up with AT&T dual-core, LTE version of the One X when it becomes available.

The notion of a Jobs-centric biopic isn?t exactly new, as Sony began developing such a film merely days after the innovator?s passing.? Last we heard, The Social Network scribe Aaron Sorkin was considering penning the studio project, but Jobs is an entirely separate film.? Hit the jump for more.

Per Variety, Joshua Michael Stern (Swing Vote) is set to direct Jobs from a script by Matt Whiteley.? The film will chronicle Jobs? life ?from a wayward hippie to co-founder of Apple.?? Despite Kutcher?s fairly heavy comedic background, I have to admit he does look a great deal like Jobs.? Nevertheless, appearance isn?t the highest item on my list when looking at the casting of a biopic, and Kutcher?s dramatic resume doesn?t exactly lead me to believe that he?ll knock the Jobs role out of the park.

Production on Jobs is slated to get underway in May, casting some doubt over the necessity of Sony?s project.? I?d be thrilled to see a Sorkin-penned biopic of Jobs? life, but the studio has to decide whether or not they want to be the second Jobs film out of the gate by a longshot.? Though I don?t necessarily think Kutcher?s the right choice to take on the Jobs role, it?s nice to see him willing to stretch his acting chops; he could easily fall into a lapse of complacency with his high profile role on Two and a Half Men. That said, I?d like nothing more than to be pleasantly surprised by his performance so we?ll see how things shake out.

Judge says groups can't shield campaign donors

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Federal Election Commission overstepped its bounds in allowing groups that fund certain election ads to keep their financiers anonymous, a federal judge has ruled.

U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson's ruling Friday could pave the way to requiring groups that spend money on electioneering communications - ads that don't expressly advocate for or against a candidate running for federal office - to disclose their donors.

The FEC ruled in 2007 that corporations and nonprofits did not have to reveal the identities of those who financed such ads. That regulation came in response to a Supreme Court ruling that gave more latitude to nonprofit groups - like the Karl Rove-backed Crossroads GPS and the President Barack Obama-leaning Priorities USA - on pre-election ads.

Campaign-finance regulations have received new scrutiny this election cycle, following federal court rulings that stripped away long-established limits on how much individuals and organizations may contribute to groups favoring certain candidates.

One such high-profile case, known as Citizens United, gave a green light for corporations and labor unions to spend unlimited sums of their cash on campaign ads. That effectively led to the expansion of "super" political action committees, which have spent more than $50 million on the Republican primary elections and are largely funded by wealthy donors.

Democratic Rep. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, who brought the suit against the FEC last year, has also proposed a bill that would require more detailed disclosure requirements for campaign finance, known as the Disclose Act. That bill has garnered support in light of nonprofits funneling anonymous money to their affiliated super PACs, effectively shielding the names of some donors.

"This is good news for our democracy and for voters," Van Hollen said in a statement. "This victory will compel the FEC to require enhanced disclosures of the funders of campaign-related advertisements."

Fred Wertheimer, president of the watchdog group Democracy 21, said it's now time for the FEC to put new rules in place that require the disclosure of donors funding such campaign expenses. Democracy 21 represented Van Hollen in the case.

In her 31-page ruling, Jackson said the FEC did not have legislative authority to substantially change McCain-Feingold, officially known as the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002. She said it is up to Congress, not the FEC, to make such changes.

The FEC, created in the 1970s in the wake of the Watergate scandal, is empowered to set regulations on campaign-finance law and enforce subsequent violations. The commission has struggled in recent months to define new regulations, largely due to a bitterly divided makeup of three Republican and three Democratic commissioners.

Under McCain-Feingold, groups that spend more than $10,000 per year on such campaign ads must file reports with the FEC. Some groups later testified before the FEC that disclosing all donors - not just ones who specifically earmarked their money for ads - would be an administrative burden.
