Southampton beats Chelsea 2-1 in Premier League

Associated Press Sports

updated 2:02 p.m. ET March 30, 2013

SOUTHAMPTON, England (AP) -Rickie Lambert scored for the 14th time in his first Premier League season as Southampton beat Chelsea 2-1 on Saturday to edge closer to securing its status in the top flight.

The highest scoring Englishman in the league this season struck from a free kick in the 35th minute only two minutes after Chelsea captain John Terry had cancelled out Jay Rodriguez's 23rd-minute opening goal at St. Mary's Stadium.

After also beating Liverpool last round, Southampton rose two spots to 13th, four points above the relegation zone with seven matches left.

The result endangers Chelsea's bid to finish in the top four and qualify for the Champions League. The reigning European champions are only two points ahead of fifth-place Arsenal after their first league loss in five weeks.

Why Apple Doesn't Own the iPad Mini Trademark

Apple is usually very protective of their intellectual property, so they're probably pretty pissed that a trademark officer rejected their application to own the phrase "iPad Mini." They wield patents like lightsabers and are not afraid to chop off the hands of people they feel are infringing on their intellectual empire. But the United States Patent and Trademark Office's reviewing attorney didn't think Apple made enough of a case to own the "mini" name.?

RELATED: Bus Line or iPad Mini Line?

Patently Apple discovered Apple's rejection letter was just released over the last few days, even though Apple was informed of the denial on January 24, 2013. There's no reason provided for the delay releasing the letter, but we do know why Apple was denied the trademark: "the applied-for mark merely describes a feature or characteristic of applicant?s goods," the reviewer writes. The USPTO attorney makes the case that the iPad mini doesn't have a "a unitary mark with a unique, incongruous, or otherwise nondescriptive meaning in relation to the goods and/or services." It's just small, he says.

RELATED: Apple Is Pulling an October Surprise with the iPad Mini

Additionally, Apple usually forwards their product website address instead of providing "a?specimen," in this case a real life iPad Mini, with their application. But this reviewer didn't appreciate that and said as much in his rejection letter.?

RELATED: All of Apple's New Small Stuff: iPad Mini and a Slimmer iMac

So, this seems to be a funny little formality more than anything. Apple can still earn the trademark if they can better explain how the iPad mini is different and unique from the larger, normal-sized iPad, besides the size deficiency, which shouldn't be a problem for Apple's team of stormtroopers lawyers. This seems like the case of one stickler trying to stick it to an evil empire over some details more than anything. Maybe the lawyers who wrote the initial application got lazy. Maybe the reviewer is a diehard Samsung fan.?

Short OR Long posts? Which one to choose? - Blogging Tips

Many people like Brian Clark, Darren Rowse and Seth Godin had built their empire online writing small posts. Maybe they don?t do it now. But they built their multi six figure business online.

On the other hand, people like Glen Allsopp, Onibalusi, built their business online writing long posts. Sometimes they write more than 4000 words for just one post.

So which type should you write? This is all what the post is about.

So Continue Reading.

Short Posts:

Short posts are posts which are less than 500 words. Sometimes it?s 200 words.

Here are the advantages of short posts:

1- Easy to write:

The best thing about short posts is that they are easy to write. You can write multiple short posts a day or at least one. Give your readers a lot of content and then gain the benefits.

2- You go to the point directly without fluff words:

This is another thing about short posts. You can give your readers a lot of tips in just 500 words and by this way you don?t waste their time. ?And they will love your content and come for the good tips.

Disadvantages:

Most of them are ignored after short time:

As they are easy to create, they are easy to ignore. Most of the old posts on the internet are ignored. Do you ever hear about any short post written from a year.

This rarly happens.

Long Posts:

Long posts are the currency of the web nowadays. They are posts that have more than 2000+ words, sometimes 4000 words.

Whenver you go and check any of GLen Allsopp posts or Jon Morrow?s posts, You will find that they are very long and you get a lot of information from it.

Here?s why Long posts are used nowadays:

1- They offer high value:

Usually, long posts contains a lot of information. You can cover everything about one topic and make it all in one resource page that people will come to check again and again over time.

2- They attracts links, shares, traffic and most importantly more subscribers:

Another great advantage and the most important advantage of writing long posts is that they are great for attracting high quality links from big blogs. You can also get hundreds if not thousands of likes, tweets and +1s from big influencers.

All this will get you a lot of visitors. Those visitors can be subscribers who you can build relationship with and then get more money.

Did you see how it?s great to write high quality long posts.

Disadvantages:

  • It needs a lot of time to prepare
  • You can be bored and so you readers will.

So which one should you choose?

You should continue writing when you can continue providing great value. Giving a lot of fluff can ruin your repitition.

However, I recommend writing long posts. You can?t be noticed nowadays with small posts.

Yes, they are easy to create.

Yes, they have value that people will love.

But with over 175 million blogs nowadays, you can?t be noticed with small posts.

This is one of the new Blogging Rules that you should follow.

So I recommend you to write even one post every 2 weeks but offer high value and then kick your ass to promote it.

Google launching same-day delivery service for online shoppers

Internet search leader Google is taking another step beyond information retrieval into grocery delivery.

The new service, called Google Shopping Express, will initially provide same-day delivery of food and other products bought online by a small group of consumers in San Francisco and suburbs located south of the city. The company, based in Mountain View, Calif., didn't say how many people will be part of the test.

If the pilot program goes well, Google plans to expand delivery service to other markets.

"We hope this will help users explore the benefits of a local, same-day delivery service, and help us kick the tires on the new service," Google said in a Thursday statement.

The delivery service is part of Google's effort to increase consumer reliance on the Internet, so it will have more opportunities to show online ads, which generate most of its revenue.

Google has learned that the more time people spend online, the more likely they are to use its dominant search engine or one of its other popular services, like its YouTube video site or Gmail, that include advertising.

The delivery service also could spur merchants to buy more online ads if Google's same-day delivery service encourages consumers to do more of their shopping online. Having to wait days or, in some cases, more than a week for the delivery of online orders ranks among the biggest drawbacks to Internet shopping.

It's a problem that Amazon.com and eBay, which operate the largest e-commerce sites, already have been trying to solve by offering same-day service in some U.S. markets. Wal-Mart Stores, the world's largest retailer, also offers same-day delivery in five markets.

A mix of national, regional and neighborhood merchants are enlisting in Google Shopping Express. The best-known names on the list include Target and Walgreen. All the merchants in the Google program will sell certain items through a central website. Google has hired courier services to pick up the orders at the merchant stores and then deliver them to the customer's home or office.

Although the couriers will be working on a contract basis, they will be driving Google-branded vehicles and wearing company-issued uniforms.

It remains unclear whether Internet shopping and same-day delivery can be profitable. Online grocer Webvan collapsed in 2001, largely because it couldn't devise a pricing plan that would pay for the costs of same-day delivery without alienating shoppers unwilling to pay too much extra for the added convenience.

Google is still trying to figure out how much to charge for its same-day delivery service. For the six-month test period in the San Francisco area, consumers won't have to pay a surcharge. Google instead will receive a commission from participating merchants.

The expansion into same-day delivery comes at the same time that Google is preparing to close some of its older online services so it can devote more attention and money to other projects.

The realignment has irked some Google users. The biggest complaints have centered on Google Reader, which allows people to automatically receive headlines and links from their favorite sites, and iGoogle, which allows Web surfers to design a page consisting of the Google search engine surrounded set up other online features, such as local weather reports and stock market quotes.

Google Reader is scheduled to close in July and iGoogle will shut down in November.

Faculty exert enthusiasm for energy minor // thedailycougar.com

Students on energy-related career tracks may want to make room in next semester?s schedule. UH has created a minor in energy.

The energy minor corresponds to the creation of UH Energy, a group of top energy research and education programs led by?Ramanan Krishnamoorti, special assistant to the president and chancellor for UH Energy.

As UH pushes toward becoming a dominant player in energy education, the need for sustainable energy education grows, Krishnamoorti said.

?If we?re going to use energy in an unsustainable way, I think we?re going to be doing the entire society a disservice. Sustainability has to become a part of the conversation,? Krishnamoorti said.

?In that sense, what I?m suggesting is that we have a discussion not just about energy, but about energy in a sustainable way.?

The introductory course for the minor is being taught by two professors, Joseph Pratt, professor of business and history, and Ognjen Miljanic, assistant professor of chemistry, and will be housed in the College of Business.

The course was advertised around campus and gathered to it a heterogeneous group of students despite the class designation.

?It is fun as a teacher to have different students discuss this with one another,? Pratt said. ?This is a lively class; there is quite a bit of discussion.?The engineers, the business majors, the economics majors, a Chinese studies major, everybody knows a little bit of a different part of the puzzle, so the discussion gets very interesting.?

?It?s kind of exciting. The enthusiasm of students has been contagious. The idea that we?re doing this at UH is very appropriate. I?ve been here a long time, and this is the place this course should be.?

Because of its interdisciplinary nature, the minor plans to move to the Honors College, Krishnamoorti said, but it will still be available to any and all UH students.

Issues addressed in the course can be applied to many fields, making the course less career-specific and showing the global significance of energy, Pratt said.

?The minor should provide a breadth of knowledge to students who are interested in jobs in energy and sustainability, green jobs as well as oil and gas jobs. It also is a good kind of citizenship training. These are big issues,? Pratt said.

?They?re going to stay big not just in Houston but in the whole world for generations. The kind of energy we use, the degree to which certain paths in the future are sustainability, the idea that energy use and global environment are interconnected, those are big ideas.?

The minor has been seriously planned since only Spring 2012, Pratt said, but the idea of streamlining the different energy courses and student organizations across campus has been in the works for several years.

The collaborative efforts of the different colleges is one of the better parts of the program, Krishnamoorti said. It allows for different points of view to the same wide-reaching subject to be heard and communicated clearly.

?Now not only are you going to talk to people who think interdisciplinary, but you have to think in a interdisciplinary way,? Krishnamoorti said.??You have to start to appreciate all the different sides.?

Oldest fossils yet of African penguins found

    Daniel Thomas

While only the black-footed, or jackass, penguin lives in Africa today, about 5 million years ago at least four penguin species lived in the continent.

    By Tia Ghose
    LiveScience

Penguin fossils from 10 million to 12 million years ago have been unearthed in South Africa, the oldest fossil evidence of these cuddly, tuxedoed birds in Africa.

The new discovery, detailed in Tuesday's issue of the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, could shed light on why the number of penguin?species plummeted on Africa's coastline from four species 5 million years ago to just one today ? Spheniscus demersus, or the jackass penguin, known for its donkeylike calls.

Daniel Thomas, a researcher at the National Museum of Natural History, and colleague Daniel Ksepka of the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center were studying rock sediments near a steel plant in Cape Town, South Africa, when they uncovered an assortment of fossils, including 17 pieces that turned out to be backbones, breastbones, legs and wings from ancient penguins.

The bones suggested these ancient birds ranged from 1-to 3-feet tall (0.3 to 0.9 meters).? For comparison, Africa's living jackass penguin, also called the black-footed penguin, stands at about 2-feet tall (0.6 meters) and weighs between 5.5 and 8.8 pounds (2.5 and 4 kilograms). [Happy Feet: A Gallery of Pudgy Penguins]

The discovery pushes back the penguin fossil record in Africa by at least 5 million years.

Because the next oldest fossils from Africa date to 5 million years ago, it's tricky to determine exactly why most penguin species disappeared from Africa.

"It's like seeing two frames of a movie," Ksepka said in a statement. "We have a frame at 5 million years ago, and a frame at 10-12 million years ago, but there's missing footage in between."

One possibility is that changing sea levels eliminated most of the penguins' nesting sites.

About 5 million years ago, sea levels were 296 feet (90 m) higher than today, and the low-lying South Africa became a patchwork of islands. Those islands provided beaches for several penguin species to create nests and rear their young while sheltering them from predators.

Once the oceans fell, most of those beaches would become mainland.

Africa's remaining jackass penguins are also on the decline. Their numbers have plummeted by 80 percent, in part because humans are overfishing their staple foods, sardines and anchovies. African penguins are being bred in captivity; for instance, a successful breeding season at the New England Aquarium in 2010 ended with the birth of 11 new African penguin chicks.

In addition, Bristol Conservation and Science Foundation, along with South African and international partners, is working to establish breeding colonies of the African penguin closer to fish resources, to ensure successful chick-rearing, according to the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

Compared to the 65 demos a year ago and tedious 75 in August, investors told me this tighter Demo Day was more manageable, the quality of startups was higher, and it felt like the YC of old that earned the reputation as tech's premier incubator.

How to initiate a multiplayer game through Game Center on iPhone and iPad

How to initiate a multiplayer game through Game Center on iPhone and iPad

The whole point of Game Center is to play online with friends and compete for leaderboard rankings. While you can start multiplayer games and challenge friends from within some games, you can also initiate multiplayer games from within Game Center itself.

    Here's how:

    1. Launch the Game Center app from the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad.
    2. Tap on the Friends tab and find the friend that you'd like to challenge. Tap on their name.
    3. Under the Games in Common section, tap on the game that you'd like to play with your friend.
    4. Now in the upper right hand corner you'll see a Play button, tap on it. This will auto-create a match for that game with the friend you have chosen.

It's worth noting that you can challenge friends to other games that you don't have in common but they'll be prompted to install or purchase the game if they don't already have it.

(AP) ? Even Brian Roberts couldn't believe the performance he delivered to help end Denver's 15-game winning streak.

Starting for only the second time, the rookie doubled his season high with 18 assists, Ryan Anderson scored 23 points and the short-handed New Orleans Hornets beat the Nuggets 110-86 on Monday night.

"It's crazy to fathom, having 18 assists," Roberts said. "Guys play years and don't have that many assists. Somebody pointed out I had more assists than they had as a team. For me to come out in my second start and do that is just a testament to my teammates making shots."

And to Roberts' work ethic, too. He never had 10 assists in four years at the University of Dayton, where he was more of a scorer than a facilitator. Then he spent five years trying to make an NBA roster before hooking on with the Hornets last summer, re-working his game to become a pass-first player.

Eleven of those passes turned into assists in the first half alone against the Nuggets, who finished with four fewer assists than Roberts. He became the 20th rookie to have 18 assists or more and the first since Darren Collison did it for New Orleans in 2010.

"I've had to grind and just fight to be on the team just to make an opportunity for myself," Roberts said. "It's something I know I don't take for granted. But without my teammates making shots, it's not even a discussion."

Anderson was 5 of 11 on 3-pointers, and the Hornets sank 14-of-25 3s overall. Darius Miller, starting in place of injured shooting guard Eric Gordon, was 4 of 5 behind the arc and had 16 points as seven Hornets scored in double figures.

New Orleans won its third in a row and was in control all the way. The Hornets led by nine at the end of the first quarter, by 21 at the half and by 18 entering the fourth.

Danilo Gallinari had 24 points for the Nuggets, who were without starting point guard Ty Lawson (right heel injury) for the third consecutive game. Denver lost for the first time since Feb. 22 against Washington after matching its 1969-70 ABA team's record of 15 straight victories.

"We played a bad game and they played a great game," said Nuggets point guard Andre Miller, who had nine points and six assists. "We were constantly taking the ball out of the basket and getting frustrated. Our game plan was to trap the ball, and their point guard found the open man. They outplayed us and outworked us at both ends."

The Hornets answered every Nuggets run, the last of which closed the gap to 96-84 when Kenneth Faried hit a tough bank shot and was fouled with 6:07 left. New Orleans' Anthony Davis followed with two free throws, Darius Miller drained a face-up 3-pointer and Davis leaped high to jam in a rebound follow, extending the lead to 103-84.

The closest Denver came in the second half was 67-58 after a 16-4 spurt midway through the third quarter. But the Hornets' Roger Mason Jr. immediately hit back-to-back 3-pointers, and New Orleans was up by double digits the rest of the way.

    This one was never close.

The Hornets went ahead 25-11 in the first quarter, getting back-to-back, wide-open 3-pointers from Anderson to cap the early run against the sluggish Nuggets. No one picked up Anderson, who led the NBA in 3-point baskets last season, when he shot from straightaway on the first one. Denver left him unguarded again as he made another 3 the next time down the court.

The Nuggets' winning streak was well on its way to ending.

"We didn't really talk about that too much," Roberts said. "We had a lot of stuff going on in here in this locker room, so we didn't want to worry about streak busting or anything like that. We just wanted to come out and play together."

Denver missed Lawson, who had averaged 21.8 points in his last 18 games, much more than New Orleans missed starting point guard Greivis Vasquez or Gordon.

"He's important to us because he makes everyone else fit," Nuggets coach George Karl said. "These last three games we were thinking we are better than we are. It's human nature."

Wilson Chandler returned for the Nuggets after missing two games with a left shoulder injury and finished with 11 points. Faried added 13 points.

Gordon, who is tied for the team lead with 16.5 points per game, sat out with a sore left ankle. Vasquez sat out with a sprained left ankle after starting the first 70 games.

Roberts, who added 13 points for his first double-double, and Miller, who was 6 of 7 from the floor, excelled in their absence.

"A lot of times this year we've let teams come back after we got ahead of them," Darius Miller said. "We didn't want to do that tonight. They went on a great run and had us on our heels a little bit, but we bounced back."

Most of Miller's baskets came off of passes from Roberts.

"It doesn't happen if he (Roberts) doesn't work hard," Hornets coach Monty Williams said. "He works his tail off."

NOTES: Nuggets reserve guard Julyan Stone left with a hyperextended right knee injury in the first half and did not return. . The Hornets started a big week of home games. They face the Los Angeles Clippers and former New Orleans point guard Chris Paul on Wednesday, and the Miami Heat on Friday. The Heat extended their winning streak to 27, beating Orlando on Monday. . A sign of the Nuggets' lack of aggressiveness: They picked up their first foul in the second quarter at the 3:49 mark and their first foul of the third quarter with 3:08 left.

MI5 spy chief to step down

    By Guy Faulconbridge

LONDON (Reuters) - The MI5 spy chief, who oversaw a safe Olympics and helped transform the Security Service's counter-terrorism operations in the wake of the 2005 London bombings, will step down next month.

Sir Jonathan Evans, appointed director general of the domestic intelligence service less than two years after the July 7 bombings, presided over an expansion anti-terrorism operations. There were no major attacks on his five-year watch.

"He has experienced the service evolving over the years and as director general has led the service through particularly challenging times of change and unrest, including the aftermath of the 7/7 bombings," said Theresa May, the home secretary.

"I would like to pay tribute to Sir Jonathan for the 33 years he has dedicated to the service," May told parliament.

A successor was not announced though local media have reported one of Evans's deputies who commands counter-terrorism operations could be appointed. MI5 chiefs, who were not publicly named until the 1990s, typically serve for about 5 years.

His successor's first big test is likely to be the Group of Eight meeting due to be held in Northern Ireland in June. An earlier G8 summit, held in Scotland in 2005, was overshadowed by the July 7 bombings on the London transport system.

Separately on Monday, a militant nationalist group in Northern Ireland said the hotel where G8 leaders are due to meet was the intended target of a bomb intercepted by Northern Irish police and defused last weekend.

The successor will also have to grapple with cost-cutting and public complacency about the threat from militants who security officials say have hatched at least one major plot a year since the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.

    THREATS

Evans, who joined MI5 - also known as the Security Service - in 1980 after graduating from Bristol University with a degree in classics, appeared in public only about once a year for a carefully worded speech about the threats to the realm.

At the service, Evans initially focused on the threat from Northern Irish militants in the 1980s. He was charged with directing international counter-terrorism operations just 10 days before the September 11 attacks.

He warned last year that al Qaeda militants were using the countries which toppled their leaders in the Arab Spring protests as bases to train radical Western youths for potential attacks on Britain.

British officials say one of the biggest threats is likely to come from a domestic cell of militants who have received training or support from al Qaeda in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia or Yemen.

"In back rooms and in cars and on the streets of this country there is no shortage of individuals talking about wanting to mount terrorist attacks here," Evans said in June. "It is essential that we maintain pressure on al Qaeda."

Evans warned against complacency, quipping that when intelligence folk smell roses they look for the funeral.

MI5 employs about 3,800 people - up from 1,800 at the time of the attacks on the Twin Towers in New York.

Given the formidable task of helping secure the 2012 Olympics, the first Games hosted by a prominent partner in the U.S.-led coalition formed after the September 11 attacks, Evans helped keep the Games safe with a light touch.

"His tireless work helped ensure the delivery of a safe and successful Olympic and Paralympic Games last year. I commend and thank him for his invaluable contribution to public safety and national security," May said.

(AP Photo/Petros Giannakouris)

(AP) ? Cypriot politicians turned to the European Union on Sunday in a last-ditch effort to help their island nation forge a viable plan to secure an international bailout after failing for a week to find a solution to a crisis that could force their country into bankruptcy.

Politicians were under pressure to come up with a solution quickly. The European Central Bank has threatened to stop providing emergency funding to Cyprus' banks after Monday if there is no agreement on a way to raise 5.8 billion euros ($7.5 billion) needed to get a 10 billion euro rescue loan package from the International Monetary Fund and the other European countries that use the euro currency.

If Cyprus fails to secure a bailout, some of its banks could collapse within days, rapidly dragging down the government and possibly forcing the country of around 1 million out of the eurozone. Analysts say that could threaten the stability of the currency used by more than 300 million people in 17 EU nations.

Despite that risk, Europe's biggest economy maintained a hard line on the negotiations. German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said in an interview "if possible we want to avoid seeing Cyprus sliding into insolvency." But he cautioned that he is "known for not giving in to blackmail, by nobody and nothing."

Heading into a decisive meeting of eurozone finance ministers on the issue in Brussels, Schaeuble said an agreement can be reached if Cyprus meets creditors' demands.

"I hope we can get to a result today. But that of course requires that the situation is viewed realistically in Cyprus," he said. "This is not about us ? the decision lies with Cyprus."

Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades and his finance minister were meeting with representatives of the troika of international creditors? the International Monetary Fund, the European Central Bank, and the European Commission, the EU's executive arm, to work out final details, officials said.

The meeting dragged on, and the start of the meeting of eurozone finance ministers was postponed by two hours, until 8 p.m. local time.

"I'm expecting quite a long night," Irish Finance Minister Michael Noonan said. "I think a deal will be done tonight but I think it will be late, because a lot of detail has to be worked out."

A plan agreed to in marathon negotiations earlier this month called for a one-time levy on all bank depositors in Cypriot banks. But the proposal ignited fierce anger among Cypriots and failed to garner a single vote in the Cypriot Parliament.

The idea of some sort of deposit grab has returned to the fore after Cyprus' attempt to gain Russian financial aid failed this past week, with deposits above 100,000 euros at the country's troubled largest lender, Bank of Cyprus, possibly facing a levy of up to 25 percent.

To avoid bankruptcy or the collapse of its banking system, Cyprus needs significantly more than the 10 billion euros international creditors are willing to lend it. There's fear that more loans would raise the country's debt to an unsustainable level. For that reason, the country has been told it must raise the additional money.

Cyprus has "to fulfill a difficult mission to save the Cypriot economy and avert a disorderly default threatening the economy if there is no final deal for the loan agreement," government spokesman Christos Sylianides said in a statement Sunday.

Officials fear that a Cypriot bankruptcy, which would likely force the country to become the first eurozone member to leave the currency bloc, would roil markets and result in uncertainty that could engulf other eurozone nations, leading to capital flight and higher government borrowing costs.

If the Cypriots agree to a plan on Sunday, the IMF, European Central Bank and European Commission will then determine whether it meets the requirement that Cyprus' debt, including any new bailout loan, be sustainable over the long run.

Any new proposal would then have to be approved Sunday evening by the Eurogroup ? the finance ministers from the 17 EU countries that use the euro.

Their decision might come only as a broad political agreement, with technical details to be hammered out in the coming days. But without an agreement in principle, the ECB is likely to pull the plug on Cyprus' banking system.

Cyprus already took significant steps toward cementing a new plan Friday night, when its lawmakers voted to restructure ailing banks, restrict financial transactions in emergencies and set up a "solidarity fund" that should act as the vehicle for raising funds from investments and contributions.

The bank restructuring will include the country's second largest lender, Laiki, which suffered heavy losses after being exposed to toxic Greek debt. The restructuring and the sale of Greek branches of Cypriot banks are expected to significantly lower the 5.8 billion euros that the country needs to raise on its own to secure the rescue loans.

Cypriot banks have been closed this past week while the plan was being worked out, and are not due to reopen until Tuesday. Cash has been available through ATMs, but many have run out quickly.

Chili and Chowder Competition Helps Children in Need of Therapy ...

Augusta - It may be spring, but this weather still calls for some chili to keep you warm.

The 12th annual Chili Chowder Challenge took place at the Augusta Armory on Saturday afternoon.

The event helps raise money for the Children's Center, an organization which helps young children with things like occupational or speech therapy.

This year, over 15 restaurants participated in the big cook off.

Exec. Dir., Children's Center, Jonathan Leach said "As our funding gets leaner every year, we're asked to do more with less. We really have to look to our local communities to kind of fill the gap between what it actually costs to provide quality service fees from the service that we get."

The Liberal Cup restaurant walked away winners today, but the big winner is the Children's Center. Organizers estimate they raised over $40,000.
