Shelby County Blooming Benefits Day offers service help to elderly ...

SHELBY COUNTY, Alabama -- The third annual Blooming Benefits Day event to provide information on services available to elderly and disabled individuals is happening Tuesday in Columbiana.

The Aging and Disability Resource Center of Middle Alabama Area Agency on Aging, also known as M4A, is hosting the event from 9 a.m. to noon at the First Baptist Church of Columbiana. Spanish translation services will be available.

Organizers said a goal is to streamline eligibility determinations while at the same time break down barriers to access services for older adults, caregivers, others with a disability of any age and their families.

Residents of Shelby County who attend will have access to information regarding Social Security benefits, veterans' social services and support, disability advocacy and support and rural housing loans and grants.

There will also be information about employment services and support, non-profit housing, free legal services, hearing screenings, Medicare, farmers market vouchers, medication assistance, property tax exemptions, food assistance and emergency preparedness.

Participants can enter into a drawing for free Walmart gift cards.

The Blooming Benefits Day is offered in partnership with Veterans Administration, Social Security Administration, Telamon Corporation, USDA Rural Development and Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind.

Other partners include the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services, Disability Rights and Resources, The ARC of Shelby, Yellow Dot Program, Shelby County Property Tax Commissioner Office, Department of Human Resources, Davis & Neal Attorneys at Law, SafeLink Wireless, New Beacon Hospice and others.

This project is funded through a grant received from the Alabama Department of Senior Services and the Administration on Aging.
