The Mediterranean cannot exist without Palestine: Andr? Azoulay ...

Marseille, April 7, 2013 (MAP)

Chairman of the Anna Lindh foundation, Andr? Azoulay, stressed that ?the Mediterranean cannot exist without Palestine. The Mediterranean was not born to accept being mutilated by the isolation of one its people, the Palestinian people?.

To those who claim that the Mediterranean will remain hostage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the royal advisor brings a downright answer: The future of the Mediterranean lies in fair and ethical coexistence between two states where the words of freedom, dignity, justice and sovereignty have the same meanings and the same requirements for all?, Azoulay who is also advisor to HM King Mohammed VI told MAP.

He went on that the Anna Lindh foundation-sponsored forum which brought together in the French city of Marseille around 1,200 NGOS from 43 countries, concurrently with a meeting of speakers of Mediterranean parliaments and a meeting of heads of Mediterranean regions and local governments has created a space and conditions to give citizen Mediterranean a historic momentum.
This momentum was made possible through a frank and sincere dialogue on the Euro-Mediterranean complexity, Azoulay pointed out insisting that this debate was required as the Mediterranean region has become, more than ever before, a focus of concerns and expectations as the region has known an ?unprecedented? mutation in its southern bank at a time its northern bank, Europe, is facing an economic and social crisis threatening to shake growth.

Stressing that the Mediterranean region remains open for all possibilities, Azoulay said he is convinced that the region will succeed in defining the most legitimate and promising foundation of Euro-Mediterranean partnership combining freedom, difference and diversity both in the northern and southern banks.

Held under the sign ?Citizens for the Mediterranean?, the forum brought together over one thousand organizations and institutions of the civil society from 42 countries of the Union for the Mediterranean to reflect on inter-cultural dialogue and cooperation as a means to face the challenges facing the region as a result of the Arab spring and the economic crisis in Europe.

The forum to wrap up this Sunday featured such important themes as ?the Mediterranean in 2020: society and values ?, ?Between modernity and regression in Euro-Mediterranean societies? ?Scenarios for a renovated Euro-Mediterranean partnership? ?how to promote intercultural and participatory citizenship?, ?how to valorize diversity and share universal value? and ?what opportunities for the youth, what societies for tomorrow?.
